Buffalo City Mission’s vision is to restore hope to the homeless and hurting of Western New York. We provide emergency shelter and nourishing meals to thousands of homeless men, women and children. But we don’t believe that’s enough.

With the strengths of our brand new Alfiero Family Center (men’s facility), along with the beautiful Cornerstone Manor, Buffalo City Mission provides comprehensive recovery programs to help homeless men, women and children rebuild stable, healthy, productive lives.

The purpose of Buffalo City Mission is to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are homeless or in need of hope, by providing the following:

  • Share the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Offer services to meet immediate physical needs of those seeking assistance, including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care
  • Bring programs of rehabilitation to those wishing to change their lives
  • Being advocates for the poor and needy through increasing public awareness

Education/Childcare - Day Care Assistant Teacher

Job Description:
This position is responsible for planning activities, implementing the program, teaching and playing with the children, working with volunteers and foster grandmothers as well as developing and maintaining positive relationships with mothers.

  • Work Schedule:  Part time position, Monday through Friday

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understanding of the stages of early child development.
  • Understanding of age appropriate behaviors and abilities.
  • Ability to play, respond and teach young children using different methods of play.
  • Ability to respond positively to mothers to increase and improve mothers parenting skills.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Associates Degree in Early Childhood, Child Development Accreditation (CDA) or a related field or equivalent
  • Be dependable, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Risk Management - PT Safety Monitor

Job Description:
As a representative of the Buffalo City Mission this position is responsible for fostering a compassionate, welcoming greeting to all who enter the building.  In addition, observing and reporting incidents in order to help ensure a safe, secure environment for clients, staff, volunteers and visitors in and around the facility at all properties.

  • Hours:  Part-time up to 28 hours/week. Inquire about shift.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follows all safety and security policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ensures that the correct entry control processes are followed consistently.
  • Maintain communication logs in up to date real time as needed.
  • Document all safety/security incidents accurately and timely.
  • Assist and diffuse potential volatile situations.
  • Conduct and assist with dorm sweeps as requested by management.

Successful candidates will have:

Thrift Store Back Room Associate - Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:

This position is responsible to ensure the receiving area and back room are maintained according to Mission procedures as well as providing excellent service to customers of the Mission’s Thrift Shop and helps to maintain the store’s appearance and efficient operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the flow of merchandise from delivery to the sales floor or an internal destination
  • Responsible for receiving, unpacking, processing and sorting, organizing, and flow of merchandise
  • Contribute to the profitability of the store by handling and helping to manage inventory and supplies in a timely and organized manner.
  • Provide a great customer, donor and volunteer experience.
  • Help to maintain inventory levels by keeping storage areas clean and organized and sharing knowledge of merchandise with management
  • Responsible for keeping a clean, safe and organized backroom to ensure efficiency
  • Work alongside, train and utilize volunteers to assist in completing tasks more efficiently
  • Cross train in operating cash register, customer service, tagging and pricing, and stocking and turnover of merchandise on the sales floor.
  • Responsible for receiving donations and providing tax receipts and customer service to donors.
  • Responsible for helping in receiving trucks and ensuring merchandise goes to proper location.
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting flow of the backroom including donors, donations, gaylords, truck deliveries, scrap, dump, and cardboard.
  • Represent the organization to all clients, volunteers and fellow co-workers in a Christ like manner that serves as an example of Christian behavior.

Associates for Training & Development:

The mission of Associates for Training and Development (A4TD) is to assist mature workers to become the best-qualified candidate for jobs consistent with their interests and abilities. As a complement to that mission, A4TD works with employers and community organizations to develop and increase the range of employment opportunities available to mature workers. As an integral part of this mission, A4TD recognizes the importance of coordinating its services with those of other organizations. Child Care Trainee

Summary:
The person will be training to plan and implement age appropriate activities within a New York State licensed and certified childcare program, teach and play with the children, as well as develop and maintain positive relationships with mothers.

Education and Experience:

  • Associates Degree in Early Childhood, Child Development Accreditation (CDA) or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Trainee must be able to pass NYS criminal background check guidelines and urine toxicology screening.

Essential Functions and Tasks:

A representative summary of training objectives is provided below. The trainee may be asked to perform related tasks other than those specifically stated in this description. The duties and responsibilities of the trainee position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the mission, values and operating principles of the Buffalo City Mission.

Candidates that train within the Cornerstone Manor ECEP will receive training in the following areas:

Completion of a minimum of 30 working hours of training every two years. Fifteen hours of such training must be received during the first six months of employment. Training topics will include:

The participant in this position will be trained in customer service and retail basics. Participant will learn all aspects of retail including customer service, merchandising, marketing, time management and leadership building.

Essential Functions and Tasks:

The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the mission, values and operating principles of the Buffalo City Mission.

Participants will be instructed on different aspects of a retail environment. Participants in this position will be trained to/in:

  • Time management, organizational skills and leadership development as related to retail.
  • Computer literacy and proper use.
  • Merchandising and product placement to best fit a customer base and increase revenue
  • Marketing techniques and strategies to best fit your customer base and impact profit
  • Cash handling and basic register training (Clover Systems)
  • Sorting, Stocking and Product Movement to best create profit
  • Creating customer retention and increasing a customer base through customer service.
  • Loss Prevention techniques and understanding shrink
  • Product knowledge and team building
  • Greeting vs. Selling
  • Overall understanding of the components of a retail environment and an understanding of the different impacts of each component on profit.
