Organizational Summary

Buffalo City Mission’s vision is to restore hope to the homeless and hurting of Western New York. We provide emergency shelter and nourishing meals to thousands of homeless men, women and children. But we don’t believe that’s enough.

With the strengths of our Men’s Center and our new state-of-the-art shelter for women and children, Cornerstone Manor, Buffalo City Mission provides comprehensive recovery programs to help homeless men, women and children rebuild stable, healthy, productive lives.

The purpose of Buffalo City Mission is to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are homeless or in need of hope, by providing the following:

  • Share the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Offer services to meet immediate physical needs of those seeking assistance, including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care
  • Bring programs of rehabilitation to those wishing to change their lives
  • Being advocates for the poor and needy through increasing public awareness
  • Assisting the community and other like-minded agencies in aiding the needy

Adjunct Teacher for Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:
This class instruction position involves a broad spectrum of topics related to the dynamics of addiction, life disabling conditions and its relatedness to self- insight, decision making and homelessness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructs diverse students on broad and specialized areas within the human service setting.
  • Assists in the preparation of course descriptions, course outlines and lesson plans as required by the Education Department.
  • Instructs two (1) hour classes weekly.
  • Communicates with the Education Manager related to student problems and need for additional student support.
  • Must have the ability to communicate the subject matter in a clear, concise and logically engaging manner
  • Ability to maintain healthy teacher – student relationships by establishing proper boundaries

Successful candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 3 years of field experience OR Associate Degree with a minimum of 5 years field experience. QHP status (CASAC/CRC/CSW) preferred.
  • Previous experience in Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Domestic Violence.
  • Working with homeless or low-income individuals/families.
  • Demonstrated skills in working with clients from various backgrounds.
  • Positive communication and interpersonal skills.

Cook at Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:

This part-time position will provide meals for over 185 people, 3 times per day.  The successful candidate will have previous experience in volume cooking, food safety procedures and good people management skills.

Work Schedule: Part time, up to 28 hours per week.

Key responsibilities:

  • Experienced in safe food handling processes.
  • Knowledge of proper cooking methods and procedures; meal planning techniques for up to 200 persons per meal; and acceptable food storage and cleaning techniques.
  • Ability to assign, instructs, train and monitor the work of kitchen staff and volunteers.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft office.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds above waist level.

Resident Coordinator - Buffalo City Mission

This position fosters a Christ-like caring atmosphere, focusing on life skill development in a safe, healthy, healing environment, while striving to meet the practical needs of all residents.
This position reports to the Manager – Residential Services. This is a part time position, no more than 28 hours per week.

Openings:
Part time, up to 28 hours/wk, shifts are as follows:
7a.m. – 3:00p.m. (including weekends, every other Sunday),
3:00p.m. – 11:00p.m. (including weekends, every other Sunday)
*shift hours/days may change as organization needs change

Key Responsibilities:

  • Acclimate residents to the facility through the Mission’s initial intake and orientation process..
  • Communicate behavioral actions through the incident reporting process.
  • Conduct unit inspections, document and communicate appropriately to respective management and provide feedback to resident and case management.
  • Report vacated units and prepare them for new residents.
  • Assist residents with day-to-day housekeeping of facility, sleeping, and lounge areas.
  • Oversee emergency shelter linen exchange as well as residents’ laundry.
  • Conduct direct observation drug and alcohol screenings, including breathalyzer and urine tests.
  • Ensure physical comfort and safety of the residents as well as meet their needs for food, shelter, clothing and personal care.
  • Maintain effective communication between staff members and Case Managers by means of various communication vehicles including matrix log, incident, written and verbal reports.
  • All other assigned job responsibilities as needed.

Safety Monitor

Job Description:
As a representative of the Buffalo City Mission this position is responsible for fostering a compassionate, welcoming greeting to all who enter the building.  In addition observing and reporting incidents in order to help ensure a safe, secure environment for clients, staff, volunteers and visitors in and around the facility at all properties.

  • Hours:  11:00pm – 7:00am, Part time up to 28 hours/week..

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follows all safety and security policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ensures that the correct entry control processes are followed consistently.
  • Maintain communication logs in up to date real time as needed.
  • Document all safety/security incidents accurately and timely.
  • Assist and diffuse potential volatile situations.
  • Conduct and assist with dorm sweeps as requested by management.
  • Ensuring the environment remains safe and secure by monitoring through all available resources the clients and guests activities.

Successful candidates will have:

  • High school diploma or GED, pursuit of/interest in further education with 2-3 years’ experience and training in a related field. NYS Security License preferred.

Thrift Store Clerk - Buffalo City Mission - Part Time

Job Description:

This part-time position will provide excellent service to customers of the Mission’s Thrift Shop while maintaining the store’s stock levels, appearance and efficiency of operations.

• Work Schedule: Part time – flexible afternoon and evening hours, Monday through Saturday including Holidays, up to 28 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers and assist in a manner representative of the Mission and its values.
  • Operate cash register to cash-out customer selections and bag purchases.
  • Maintain the store including stocking shelves, re-hanging items, keeping the dressing rooms empty of discarded selections, returning merchandise to their proper area and creating displays.
  • Receive incoming merchandise and sort, tag and price donations.
  • Test electrical appliances and determine the usability of furniture and home décor.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds above waist level.

Successful candidates will have:

  • A minimum high school degree or GED.
  • 1-2 years’ experience working in a retail environment.

Volunteer Community Coordinator - Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:

This part-time position is an integral component of outreach to our community and will be responsible for maintaining ongoing in-kind donations, community drives and holiday resident gift databases.  This position will also facilitate court ordered volunteer orientations, research and participate at school fairs to generate awareness of the Mission and host tours.

    • Work Schedule: Part time, up to 28 hours per week.  Flexible hours: days, evenings and weekends as needed.  Must be available to work holidays as needed (ex. Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).

Key Responsibilities:

Donation Coordination:

      • Ensure the policy and procedure of the Mission’s internal donation process
      • Maintain communication and follow up needs with in-kind donors
      • Receive donations and follow thank you process to build donor relations
      • Documents community events and effectively communicates story and picture to PR
      • Organizes, tracks and documents off-site volunteers school hour’s orientations
      • Provide volunteer orientation for court ordered volunteers as well as placement
      • Provides tours for community as needed
      • Implements volunteers and staff supervisors yearly appreciation plan under the direction of the Manager of the Volunteers
      • Available for special volunteer events (Turkey Express, Hambone Express, etc.)
      • Assists Volunteer Department in other areas as needed

 

Successful candidates will have:

      • Able, comfortable and confident in speaking in group settings
      • Excellent organizational skills
      • Excellent Computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Office
