Buffalo City Mission’s vision is to restore hope to the homeless and hurting of Western New York. We provide emergency shelter and nourishing meals to thousands of homeless men, women and children. But we don’t believe that’s enough.

With the strengths of our Men’s Center and our new state-of-the-art shelter for women and children, Cornerstone Manor, Buffalo City Mission provides comprehensive recovery programs to help homeless men, women and children rebuild stable, healthy, productive lives.

Chief Financial Officer at Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:
This position plans, organizes, directs and controls the accounting and control function of the organization and reports operational results through accurate financial reporting.

  • Work Schedule: Full time position, Monday through Friday, occasional weekends and holidays as needed for special functions.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Executive Management
  • Serve as a member of Senior Leadership team
  • Participate in key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives, operating model and operational execution
  1. Financial Planning and Analysis
  • Prepare and maintain regular financial planning reports; Monthly profit and loss forecast by division (vs. budget); Monthly 12-month cash flow forecast.
  • Complete analysis of financial results; Develop recommendations (strategic and tactical).
  • Develop and execute analysis of various business initiatives (e.g., opening new operations, asset acquisition, new service launches).

  1. Finance
  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.

  • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
  1. Planning, Policy, and Investor Relations
  • Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets.
  • Develop financial business plans and forecasts.
  • Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior management team.
  • Engage the finance committee of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.

  1. Accounting and Administration
  • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function; supervise company nonprofit’s finance staff.
  • Oversee and execute processes to ensure the timely completion of monthly financial statements to include the monthly reconciliation of all bank/investment accounts to the Mission’s accounting software.
  • Oversee and execute processes regarding Cornerstone Manor LP and its intercompany relationship with the Mission.
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and company nonprofit’s board of directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
  1. Team Management
  • Mentor and develop a direct team, managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluation, and the building of an effective team dynamic.
  • Guide larger, cross-divisional teams outside of direct span of control within the five main company national nonprofit program areas.
  • Oversee the organization’s human resource function and departments overall performance.
  • Oversee the Office Manager to include oversight of I.T. management for the organization.
  • Oversee Grant Administrator to ensure organizations need for grant funding sources are being met and ensure all grants are managed properly with timely reporting per specific grant guidelines.
  1. Accounting Activities
  • Oversee preparation of month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial statements
  • Review all month-end closing activities including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations and corporate/overhead cost allocation
  • Enhance and implement financial and accounting systems, processes, tools and control systems
  • Serve as final point of escalation for Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable issues
  • Develop and manage accounting staff
  • Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors; Manage preparation and support of all external audits
  1. Cash Management
  • Oversee weekly cash management; Approve weekly payables; Execute check signing

  • As a true business partner to the CEO/Executive Director and Department Directors, assess organizational performance against both the annual budget and company’s long-term strategy.
  • Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO/ Executive Director and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations.
  • Engage the board finance, audit, and investment committees around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model(s) and operational delivery.
  • Assist in establishing yearly objectives and meeting agendas, and selecting and engaging outside consultants (auditors, investment advisors).
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and costs management in alignment with company’s strategic plan, especially as the organization considers collaborations with external organizations.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Minimum of MBA; a CPA would be a plus
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience working as a CFO or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with an annual operating budget of at lease 10 million.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the Office of Management and Budget Circular A133 audit.
  • Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software packages.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.

Childhood Enrichment Program Coordinator

Job Description:
This part-time position is responsible to further develop, oversee and maintain the After School program which includes the Summer Day Camp program.  This position exists to support, manage, supplement and/or teach study skills so that students are empowered and encouraged to boost spiritual growth and academic achievement.

  • Work Schedule: August – June, Monday – Friday 1:30PM to 6:30PM
    June – August (summer months, 40 hours/week), Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Key responsibilities:

  • Design, schedule, implement and monitor specific duties & routine activities for LEAP and SKATE programs; seasonal events appropriate for each age group, field trips and parent, child, teacher, family, and case manager conferences as needed.
  • Accountable for student, summer staff & volunteer recruitment and retention

  • Acclimate residents to the facility through the Mission’s initial intake and orientation process..
  • Communicate behavioral actions through the incident reporting process.
  • Conduct unit inspections, document and communicate appropriately to respective management and provide feedback to resident and case management.
  • Report vacated units and prepare them for new residents.
  • Assist residents with day-to-day housekeeping of facility, sleeping, and lounge areas.
  • Oversee emergency shelter linen exchange as well as residents’ laundry.
  • Conduct direct observation drug and alcohol screenings, including breathalyzer and urine tests.
  • Ensure physical comfort and safety of the residents as well as meet their needs for food, shelter, clothing and personal care.
  • Maintain effective communication between staff members and Case Managers by means of various communication vehicles including matrix log, incident, written and verbal reports.

Safety Monitor

As a representative of the Buffalo City Mission this position is responsible for fostering a compassionate, welcoming greeting to all who enter the building.  In addition observing and reporting incidents in order to help ensure a safe, secure environment for clients, staff, volunteers and visitors in and around the facility at all properties.

  • Hours:  Now recruiting for all shifts: 7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follows all safety and security policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ensures that the correct entry control processes are followed consistently.

Thrift Store Associate - Buffalo City Mission

This part-time position will provide excellent service to customers of the Mission’s Thrift Shop while maintaining the store’s stock levels, appearance and efficiency of operations.

• Work Schedule: Part time – flexible afternoon and evening hours, Monday through Saturday including Holidays, up to 28 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers and assist in a manner representative of the Mission and its values.
  • Operate cash register to cash-out customer selections and bag purchases.
  • Maintain the store including stocking shelves, re-hanging items, keeping the dressing rooms empty of discarded selections, returning merchandise to their proper area and creating displays.
  • Receive incoming merchandise and sort, tag and price donations.
  • Test electrical appliances and determine the usability of furniture and home décor.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds above waist level.

Successful candidates will have:

  • 1-2 years’ experience working in a retail environment.

Volunteer Coordinator at Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:
The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible to schedule each individual by matching the interests of volunteers with an opportunity that best suits their skill set/interest to be able to serve the organization’s needs. The volunteer coordinator must make an effort to ensure that individual volunteers feel comfortable with their placements and fully understand their responsibilities.  This position will also be responsible for all communication to organize volunteers’ schedules and ensure the volunteers are aware of additional volunteering opportunities.

Work Schedule: Part time, up to 28 hours per week.  Flexible hours: days, evenings and weekends as needed.  Must be available to work holidays (ex. Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage volunteer orientation process and tours; interviewing, screening , placements, schedules and exiting of volunteers
  • Help organize and participate in volunteer appreciation programs and special events
  • Maintain volunteer records; oversee the CERVIS volunteer program
  • Performs quarterly volunteer surveys
