Buffalo City Mission’s vision is to restore hope to the homeless and hurting of Western New York. We provide emergency shelter and nourishing meals to thousands of homeless men, women and children. But we don’t believe that’s enough.

With the strengths of our Men’s Center and our new state-of-the-art shelter for women and children, Cornerstone Manor, Buffalo City Mission provides comprehensive recovery programs to help homeless men, women and children rebuild stable, healthy, productive lives.

The purpose of Buffalo City Mission is to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are homeless or in need of hope, by providing the following:

  • Share the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Offer services to meet immediate physical needs of those seeking assistance, including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care
  • Bring programs of rehabilitation to those wishing to change their lives

Childhood Enrichment Program Coordinator

Job Description:
This part-time position is responsible to further develop, oversee and maintain the After School program which includes the Summer Day Camp program.  This position exists to support, manage, supplement and/or teach study skills so that students are empowered and encouraged to boost spiritual growth and academic achievement.

  • Work Schedule: August – June, Monday – Friday 1:30PM to 6:30PM
    June – August (summer months, 40 hours/week), Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Key responsibilities:

  • Design, schedule, implement and monitor specific duties & routine activities for LEAP and SKATE programs; seasonal events appropriate for each age group, field trips and parent, child, teacher, family, and case manager conferences as needed.
  • Accountable for student, summer staff & volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Provide academic support, develop learning opportunities and build effective curriculum & assessments
  • Build recreational sports activities that promote educational, group and personal skills through practice.
  • Set and maintain clear expectations of behavior and consequent corrective action.
  • Coordinate with McKinney-Vento liaison and staff, volunteers and tutors.

Successful candidates will have:

  • An Associates degree in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education or a related field preferred. Minimum requirement is High School diploma or equivalent AND at least two years’ experience working directly with children ages 13 or less.
  • Minimum 2 years managing community programs, staff and children.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability, comfortable, and confidence in dealing with school-age children
  • A valid NY state driver license, with a clean motor vehicle record and the ability to drive a 10-passenger van.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Director Human Resources at Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:
The Director-Human Resources is directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resource function to include payroll administration.

Work Schedule: Full time position, Monday through Friday, occasional weekends and holidays as needed for special functions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develops and administers various human resources plans and procedures for all company personnel.
  • Administers payroll process.
  • Plans, organizes and controls all activities of the department. Participates in developing department goals, objectives and systems.
  • Implements and annually updates employee annual evaluation program; rewrites job descriptions as necessary; monitors the performance evaluation program and revises as necessary.
  • Develops, recommends and implements personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains handbook on policies and procedures; performs benefits administration to include claims resolution, change reporting, approving invoices for payment and annual re-evaluation of policies for cost-effectiveness.
  • Participate and make recommendations pertaining to progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Conducts recruitment effort for all exempt and nonexempt personnel and temporary employees; conducts new-employee orientations; employee relations counseling, outplacement counseling and exit interviewing; writes and places advertisements.
  • Establishes and maintains department records and reports. Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings, such as seminars. Maintains company organization charts.
  • Evaluates reports, decisions and results of department in relation to established goals. Recommends new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
  • Leads investigations of all claims of staff misconduct and documents findings.
  • Represent the organization to all clients, volunteers and fellow co-workers in a Christ like manner that serves as an example of Christian behavior.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and education, SHRM-CP certification preferred
  • Five (5) years or more relevant business experience in Human resources matters.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with a minimum of supervision; identify problems and implement or recommend solutions; interpret and apply policies and procedures within limits of authority.

Resident Coordinator - Part Time Positions

  • Acclimate residents to the facility through the Mission’s initial intake and orientation process..
  • Communicate behavioral actions through the incident reporting process.
  • Conduct unit inspections, document and communicate appropriately to respective management and provide feedback to resident and case management.
  • Report vacated units and prepare them for new residents.
  • Assist residents with day-to-day housekeeping of facility, sleeping, and lounge areas.
  • Oversee emergency shelter linen exchange as well as residents’ laundry.
  • Conduct direct observation drug and alcohol screenings, including breathalyzer and urine tests.
  • Ensure physical comfort and safety of the residents as well as meet their needs for food, shelter, clothing and personal care.
  • Maintain effective communication between staff members and Case Managers by means of various communication vehicles including matrix log, incident, written and verbal reports.

Resident Coordinator - Cornerstone Manor

  • Be the point of contact by communicating with Manager-Residential Services to seek guidance related to higher decision making when needed.

Safety Monitor

As a representative of the Buffalo City Mission this position is responsible for fostering a compassionate, welcoming greeting to all who enter the building.  In addition observing and reporting incidents in order to help ensure a safe, secure environment for clients, staff, volunteers and visitors in and around the facility at all properties.

  • Hours:  Now recruiting for all shifts: 7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follows all safety and security policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ensures that the correct entry control processes are followed consistently.
  • Maintain communication logs in up to date real time as needed.
  • Document all safety/security incidents accurately and timely.
  • Assist and diffuse potential volatile situations.
  • Conduct and assist with dorm sweeps as requested by management.

Temporary After School Childcare - Grant Awarded Position at Buffalo City Mission

Opening:

  • AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM: Position assignment would follow the school year start in early September 2018 and go thru June 2019.  Work Schedule: Part time position about 25 hours/week, Monday through Friday, 2:30pm to 6:30pm for After-School program.

Job Description:
The above position is responsible for planning activities, implementing programs, teaching and playing with the children, working with volunteers and foster grandmothers as well as developing and maintaining positive relationships with mothers.

Key responsibilities:

  • Understanding of the stages of early child development.
  • Understanding of age appropriate behaviors and abilities
  • Ability to play, respond and teach young children using different methods of play.
  • Ability to respond positively to mothers to increase and improve mothers parenting skills.

Volunteer Service Coordinator - Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:

This position’s main objective is to build positive relationships between the Buffalo City Mission and its volunteers.

Work Schedule: Part time, up to 28 hours per week.  Flexible hours: days, evenings and weekends as needed.  Must be available to work holidays (ex. Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implements the Mission’s policies and procedures regarding community donations of in-kind goods throughout the year ie. Christmas gift needs for the men, women and children.
  • Ensures that supportive follow-up communication with donors and staff are maintained as needed.
  • Builds relationships with donors and suggests creative ways of engagement as needs arise.
  • Tracks all donations received by the Volunteer dept.
  • Oversees Court Ordered orientation, placement and tracks hours for reporting.
  • Performs tours at both Cornerstone Manor and Tupper locations for volunteers and groups.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Associate Degree in social sciences, communications or related field, in lieu of  Associate’s degree, a High School Diploma/GED + 3-4 years of volunteer department work related experience
  • Strong communications, time management and good managerial skills. Detailed oriented, adaptable, organized and ability to successfully handle multiple projects and tasks.
  • Is positive and enthusiastic.
  • Communication Intelligence – Listens to others, able to communicate issues clearly and credibly with widely varied audiences and overcome resistance; fosters open communication and manages emotion in positive ways.  Comfortable speaking in a group setting.
  • Excellent telephone etiquette with professional verbal and written skills a must!
  • Working with homeless or low-income families and substantial knowledge of community resources helpful.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office. Experience working with databases desirable.
