Organizational Summary

Buffalo City Mission’s vision is to restore hope to the homeless and hurting of Western New York. We provide emergency shelter and nourishing meals to thousands of homeless men, women and children. But we don’t believe that’s enough.

With the strengths of our Men’s Center and our new state-of-the-art shelter for women and children, Cornerstone Manor, Buffalo City Mission provides comprehensive recovery programs to help homeless men, women and children rebuild stable, healthy, productive lives.

The purpose of Buffalo City Mission is to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are homeless or in need of hope, by providing the following:

  • Share the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Offer services to meet immediate physical needs of those seeking assistance, including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care
  • Bring programs of rehabilitation to those wishing to change their lives
  • Being advocates for the poor and needy through increasing public awareness
  • Assisting the community and other like-minded agencies in aiding the needy
  • Maintaining administrative excellence and the highest levels of personal integrity and commitment.

Donor Engagement Officer for Buffalo City Mission

Our Purpose
The purpose of Buffalo City Mission is to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are homeless or in need of hope.

Job Description
In order to meet the short and long-term goals of City Mission, and built on a firm understanding of each donor’s charitable interest, passions and values, the Director of Donor Engagement works closely with the Associate Executive Director to:

  • Develop and implement strategy for organizational stakeholders and their spheres of influence in the areas of annual, capital, and deferred giving.
  • Cultivate relationships that produce increased and sustainable cash and non-cash gifts, and increased involvement and advocacy.

The successful candidate is responsible for soliciting gifts of $2500 and higher from individual and institutional investors as well as prospective investors.  It is understood that initial assignments will have a history of making gifts to the organization of $1,000 to $100,000.

In the first 90 days, expected to engage in relationships with approximately 50 current investors to identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit major gifts.  At the conclusion of the initial 90 days the current portfolio will expand to 150 names.

Work Schedule:
Full time salaried position with competitive compensation and benefits. Some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required as needed.

Key responsibilities:

Portfolio Growth

    • From assigned portfolio of investors 1, and their connections and spheres of influence:
      • Investors=individuals, small businesses, corporations, churches, and foundations.
      • Year One — grow $75,000 in new and increased 2  revenue (1x salary)
      • Year Two — grow $150,000 in new and increased revenue (2x salary)
      • Year Three — grow $375,000 in new and increased revenue (5x salary)
      • Year Four & Beyond — sustain $525,000 in new and increased revenue (7x salary)

Portfolio Retention

    • From assigned portfolio of investors 3
      • Year One — retain 15% of donors at giving levels from the year prior
      • Year Two — retain 20% of donors at giving levels from the year prior
      • Year Three — retain 25% of donors at giving levels from the year prior
      • Year Four & Beyond — retain 30% of donors at giving levels from the year prior

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience in moves management and closing deals in order to build a sustainable pipeline of new and repeat business;
  • Three to five years of experience in outside sales or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and exceed set financial goals and performance metrics;
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively;
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision;
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office Suite computer skills;
  • Professional attitude and appearance;
  • A growing relationship with Jesus Christ and an active member of a local congregation;

2 New revenue is revenue generated from prospects—preferably prospects of assigned donors—and increased revenue is revenue that is greater than baseline giving from the year prior or within a specified timeframe.  Increased revenue will affect other metrics such as a donor’s average gift and average cumulative giving, etc.

3 Does not include donor growth.  Retention is based on the said % of the remaining donors within the portfolio.


Food Service Attendant at Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:

This part-time position is responsible for reheating pre-cooked food to proper safety temperatures that will be served to 180+ clients. In addition this position is responsible for instructing volunteers and clients in minor food preparation, serving meals, and cleaning up the dining room and kitchen after each service.

Work Schedule: Part time, up to 28 hours per week.

Key responsibilities:

  • Experienced in safe food handling processes.
  • Knowledge of reheating and maintaining proper food temperatures of pre-cooked meals and acceptable food storage and cleaning techniques.
  • Ability to assign, instruct, train and monitor the work of kitchen volunteers.
  • Maintain food temperature logs of served meals.
  • Adhere to all New Your State sanitary regulations.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft office.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds above waist level.

Safety Monitor

As a representative of the Buffalo City Mission this position is responsible for fostering a compassionate, welcoming greeting to all who enter the building.  In addition observing and reporting incidents in order to help ensure a safe, secure environment for clients, staff, volunteers and visitors in and around the facility at all properties.

  • Hours:  Now recruiting for all shifts: 7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follows all safety and security policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ensures that the correct entry control processes are followed consistently.
  • Maintain communication logs in up to date real time as needed.
  • Document all safety/security incidents accurately and timely.
  • Assist and diffuse potential volatile situations.

  • Work Schedule:  Part time position, Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 4:30pm, up to 28 hours/week.

Thrift Store Clerk - Buffalo City Mission - Part Time

Job Description:

This part-time position will provide excellent service to customers of the Mission’s Thrift Shop while maintaining the store’s stock levels, appearance and efficiency of operations.

• Work Schedule: Part time – flexible afternoon and evening hours, Monday through Saturday including Holidays, up to 28 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers and assist in a manner representative of the Mission and its values.
  • Operate cash register to cash-out customer selections and bag purchases.
  • Maintain the store including stocking shelves, re-hanging items, keeping the dressing rooms empty of discarded selections, returning merchandise to their proper area and creating displays.
  • Receive incoming merchandise and sort, tag and price donations.
  • Test electrical appliances and determine the usability of furniture and home décor.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds above waist level.

  • 1-2 years’ experience working in a retail environment.

Volunteer Service Coordinator - Buffalo City Mission

Job Description:

This positions main objective is to build positive relationships between the Buffalo City Mission and its volunteers.

    • Work Schedule: Part time, up to 28 hours per week.  Flexible hours: days, evenings and weekends as needed.  Must be available to work holidays (ex. Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).

Key Responsibilities:

  • To be a liaison to our volunteers as needed
    • Be the initial point of contact for all communications including email, phones and mail correspondence for the department
    • Greet and initiate individuals and group volunteers’ time of service and oversee groups and individuals as needed some, evening and/or weekends may apply
  • Maintain, organize and implement annual volunteer appreciation program
  • Perform tours
  • Assists in maintaining database of all volunteers which consists of:  assignments, hours of service, scheduling volunteers, and ensures all necessary paperwork for each assignment is properly completed
  • Assists Volunteer Coordinator with coordinating volunteer orientations (for ex. taking pictures of all volunteers and uploading information to CERVIS),  assists in ensuring all volunteers remain in compliance with volunteer organization policy and requirements

Successful candidates will have:

  • Associate Degree in human services ,in lieu of Associate’s degree, a High School Diploma/GED 2-3 years of volunteer department work related experience
  • Strong communications, time management and good managerial skills. Detailed oriented, adaptable, organized and ability to successfully handle multiple projects and tasks.
  • Is positive and enthusiastic.
  • Communication Intelligence – Listens to others, able to communicate issues clearly and credibly with widely varied audiences and overcome resistance; fosters open communication and manages emotion in positive ways.  Comfortable speaking in a group setting.
  • Excellent telephone etiquette with professional verbal and written skills a must!
  • Working with homeless or low-income families and substantial knowledge of community resources helpful.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office. Experience working with databases desirable.
