Pay a medical bill or buy groceries? Mail the rent check or fix the car? Every day, countless working-poor individuals and families face tough decisions like this. Sadly, they live their lives on the edge of homelessness.
Buffalo City Mission provides a buffer for those in the urban core who are struggling week to week just to survive. We reach out with programs and services that help them stay in their homes and break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
Qualifying low-income families receive boxes of food through our weekly grocery giveaway. Each family receives enough food for several meals and we include recipes that help stretch the groceries even further.
Families who receive groceries also meet with our case manager who evaluates their needs and makes referrals to other agencies.
With the help of 200 compassionate volunteers, more than 3,500 low-income families, shut-ins, injured and elderly folks have a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixin’s delivered right to their door on Thanksgiving Day. On Christmas Day, Hambone Express! rides again, delivering another 2,500 single-serving dinners.
Many we serve through this outreach are isolated elderly people or single working mothers who can’t afford the ingredients for a special holiday meal. Some tell us without Turkey Express! their holidays would be just like any other day.
Buffalo City Mission provides an atmosphere of hope and love during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. We celebrate each of these holidays by hosting a traditional feast complete with turkey, dressing and all the trimmings for more than 350 individuals. During the holidays, families seeking food assistance receive extra food items to make a special holiday dinner in their own homes!
