Thursday, August 17, 2006
A grand opening will be held Friday for the new Cornerstone Manor, the women and children's shelter operated by the Buffalo City Mission.
The $9.2 million facility at Michigan and North streets allows the organization to double capacity, serving up to 124 women and children in 46 individual units and 12 family apartments, plus 16 emergency beds and three emergency apartments. The former facility on Carlton Street housed up to 60 people.
In addition to emergency shelter, the site also offers a two-year transitional housing and recovery program.
The facility, funded by a variety of state and foundation grants and tax credits, also includes an on-site school program, a medical clinic and a new after-school program operated by Peace of the City Ministry.
The City Mission expects to see its total operating budget increase from to $3.3 million, with employment growing to 75, including the 15 new jobs at Cornerstone.
